The recovery from the initial procedure is very short. There may be some discomfort lasting just a few short days and if this is significant, pain medication can help. We generally recommend that patients return to activity as tolerated. At times, a rehab program or physical therapy is used in conjunction with the treatment to prevent new injuries from happening.
PRP injections are used to stimulate the body to heal itself–the results may not be immediate. We expect improved pain levels and increased function to start around 4-6 weeks after the procedure. These results can continue to improve over the next few months as damaged tissue is healed and the body responds to the stresses placed on these tissues. Many patients only need one injection. However, at times, a second PRP injection may be beneficial as a “booster” to the regenerative process.
